Expanding the Workforce Pipeline

Strengthening South Dakota’s Rural Health Care Workforce

The South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations (SDAHO) is proud to lead a four-year initiative (July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2027) funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). This $1.15 million grant aims to enhance access to healthcare services across rural South Dakota by developing a robust pipeline of essential health care workers.

Awareness Campaign: “Rural Health Care – Expanding the Workforce Pipeline”

To support our recruitment efforts, SDAHO has launched a video series showcasing real health care professionals from South Dakota communities. These stories highlight their roles, training paths, and the vital impact they have on rural health care.

These videos aim to inspire individuals—especially high school students and those considering a career change—to explore opportunities in health care.

Featured communities and professionals include:

Mobridge, SD | Mobridge Regional Hospital and Clinics | Melissa Mulloy, RN, BSN, CEN

Irene, SD | Sunset Manor | Sarah Erickson, Health Information Manager

Irene, SD | Sunset Manor | Jennifer Pelowski, LPN, Wakonda Heritage Manor

About the Grant

At the heart of this project is the South Dakota Rural Workforce Network (SDRWN), a collaboration among critical access hospitals, nursing homes, technical schools, universities, and nonprofit organizations. Together, we’re focused on:

  • Recruiting and training entry-level health care professionals such as nursing assistants, phlebotomists, home health aides, housekeepers, food service workers, and medical assistants.
  • Engaging rural community members, second-career adults, and high school students to pursue meaningful careers in healthcare.
  • Alleviating workforce shortages to ensure that licensed professionals can focus on delivering high-quality care.
