Employee engagement continues to be a challenge for organizations across the nation. Henry S. Miller, the author of The Serious Pursuit of Happiness, has identified 10 best practices for enhanced employee engagement.
According to Gallup, only 13 percent of employees are engaged at work. The poll splits employees into three types:
- Engaged – Those who work with passion and help move the organization forward
- Not engaged – Those who have essentially “checked out,” with no energy extended into work
- Actively disengaged – Those who actively act out their unhappiness at work, undermining engaged co-workers
A separate Gallup study of 200 hospitals found that nurse engagement is the No. 1 predictor of mortality variation across hospitals — even surpassing inadequate staffing. The researchers say that the level of engagement of a facility’s existing nursing staff should be top priority in improving quality and safety.
